Eva Hesse's piece titled 'No Title' (1969-70) features latex covered rope draped and suspended from the ceiling. To me, the knotted rope looks almost like intestines, while the latex makes the piece look fleshy. I find the piece quite disturbing because when I look at it, I see bits of flesh strung up in the space, creating a strange, tangled web.
I like the way the piece is installed and how it takes up space. It looks as though I should be able to move around in it and interact with it, which is something that intrigues me, especially as I know that because of the hardened latex, the piece isn't as flexible as it looks. I also like that the piece can be adapted to a space because of how it
The piece itself never changes, but the way it is shown depends on the environment. I like the idea that an artwork can adapt to its surroundings, and this is something that applies to my soft sculpture installations as they can be hung in different ways, subject to the space. I think this makes an artwork effective, as it can be manipulated to suit an environment and therefore can look it's best in any exhibition space.
Hesse's sculptures were minimalist and often aimed to challenge the traditional ideas surrounding beauty, similar to my own.
