The Importance of Public Art

It is important to me that my artwork is accessible, and therefore open to the public. I believe that art is both important and useful and everyone should have the opportunity to benefit from it. I am also passionate about the importance of art in education, and wish to pursue this passion by becoming an art teacher.

Public art is important for a number of reasons, including that it can enrich communities.

It’s a great tool for civic engagement, building social capital and encouraging civil discourse. It provides professional opportunities for artists and cultivates an environment in which the creative class thrives. It boosts local economies. Businesses supply materials and labor; restaurants, hotels and transportation companies benefit from a site that attracts visitors.

It can also enliven the area, improving morale and productivity, as well as raising awareness around certain issues and encouraging learning.

I also believe that there are many people who may enjoy art, but don't really have access to it normally. They may not be able to afford the entry fees to exhibitions, or the travel costs to see the work they like, or they may just feel uncomfortable and out of place in traditional gallery spaces. Galleries are often considered to b something quite high class, due to their history, which may put off some people. I know that it can make me quite uncomfortable sometimes too. This is one of the main reasons why it is important to me that my work is public or at least free to access.
